‘Unwanted’ Indian Girls Get New Names

by Amit Kumar Singh on October 25, 2011

Who wants a name like “Nakusa” or “Nakushi,” which mean “unwanted” in Hindi.

No One!

Many parents in India chose this name because of their believe the next child will be a boy.

Such A Shame for Indians, where the only word for strength and power is feminine -”Shakti” means “power” and “strength”.

India has worst sex ratio in the world. There are only 914 girls for every 1,000 boys under the age of six in India.

Development in the medical technology, such as ultrasound, making it easy to detect the sex of the fetus.

Although it is illegal to detect sex of the baby in India, the desire of having a boy has developed a heinous industry of abortion. Whole India supported fight against corruption, I am wondering when they’ll support fight against crimes against women in India.

This week, more than 200 Indian girls, who were unwanted, changed their names and started a new life of freedom.

We need greater freedom for women in India and Indian women themselves need greater control over their lives.

Its an another start and initiatives like this will change India one day.
